Announcements

30 August: I have a thesis defense to attend next Wednesday (6 Sept) from 2-4. For that day, my office hours will be 1-2 and 4-5. Chances are good it won't take the whole time, so I'll be in my office when it's done.

Homework 1 comments: Problem 6: This problem is essentially the same as problem 8.5 (b) in Griffiths. The main thing is that the conductor is one half of a capacitor.

Problem 5: You are using the stress tensor here primarily to determine the direction of the pressure. Notice that the equation they refer to is one for a tensor aligned with the magnetic field. So although the B field is azimuthal, consider that form to be the value of the tensor at a location at, say x=a, y=0.

Office hours

Monday 4-5p, Wednesday 3-5p, Thursday 2-4p Let me know if you can't make these - we can make an appointment.
