Professor: Chip Durfee

Office: Meyer Hall 330

Meeting Times: Tuesday, Thursday 11:00-12:15

Room: Marquez Hall 322

Announcements

11 Jan.: The slides that I presented on the first day are posted below in the lecture notes section.

I will post the first homework soon. For Tuesday's class, please read section 1.1 - 1.4. Tuesday we will work through the classical oscillator, linear and nonlinear.

15 Jan.: I posted a short homework (one problem), due by end of day Thursday. I will be available during office hours today (Tuesday) and Wednesday to help you work on the calculations. To give an introduction to NLO, we will be considering first the problem of second harmonic generation at a basic level, before diving into the more complete treatment in the book that uses tensors for the NL susceptibility. Reading for Thursday: 2.1 and 2.2. Section 2.2 is for sum frequency generation, but our treatment in class will be for SHG.

18 Jan. : HW 2 is posted. I will email you all a pdf of some reading for tuesday. Before we dive into nonlinear tensors, we will review birefringence and its application to phase matching.

26 Jan. : HW 3 is posted. I have to help out with declaration day at the student center tuesday afternoon, so I will have to move my office hours to thursday. The homework will be due friday.

3 Feb: HW 4 is posted.

3 Feb: HW 4 is posted.

18 March: HW 6 is posted.

23 March: Midterm is posted. I changed my mind about the midterm, and it is now just a take-home. I figure if you're doing the work to do the poblems and you've figured them out, you might as well just turn them in and we can save class time for new material. The test will be due at beginning of class thursday, I will be out of town from end of colloquium tuesday through wednesday night. Ground rules:

Open books, notes and mathematica.

No internet or journals, no communication with your fellow students or other people.

The problems are not numeric in nature, but feel free to make plots if it helps you understand or get across what you are doing.

Ask me for any clarifications, and I will post any clarifications (and maybe hints) on our course website.

HW6 can be turned in the following Monday by 5pm.

Office hours

Office hours:

Monday 2:00-4:00 We have the Physics Library for this slot - I will typically be waiting in my office, but if more than one person shows up, we can use the library for working as a group.

Wednesday 11:00-12:00 and 1:00 - 3:00

Mathematica Demos

You can use these as a template for programming you want to do. I would like you to attribute me when you do though. These aren't actually pdf's. Do a "save link as" to save these to your computer, then open with Mathematica. In most cases the output has been deleted to save server space, so you have to run the code to see the output. Please note that thee is a bug in the Fourier[ ] routine (FFT) in v7.0.0. This does not show in earlier versions, and was fixed in 7.0.1 and later. (9.0.0 is the current version)

Links to literature in nonlinear optics

Feel free to add to the list of database and journal sites. Let me know if any links are broken.

Journal Database pages

Use these to go to papers where you know the reference, or for searching for related papers

Scitation: American Institute of Physics journals search

Optics Infobase: Optical Society of America journal search. Good for Optics Letters, Optics Express, Applied Optics, JOSA A and B, etc

CSM link to physics-related databases. In particular, try Web of Science (online Science Citation Index). This is the best resource for finding papers that are related to each other. I think our access goes back 10 years from present.

Google Scholar

Journal pages

You can go to these to browse current issues or to look up specific references. These journals are European journals that are not indexed through Scitation or Optics Infobase.

Applied Physics B

Journal of Physics B

Optics Communications

Journal Articles

Each one of you should add references you think would be of general interest to this list. We will have a rotating schedule for when it will be your turn. (Please note that this will be part of your grade...)

Click 'edit' at the right to add references. Include a short description, make a new category if it makes sense. Links only - don't upload actual pdf's please. Put your last name and posting date along with the citation.
